Anyone who’s ever bought a house where the previous owners were a little do-it-yourself crazy and had to spend thousands of dollars fixing their “repairs” understands a about the wisdom of paying others to do work for you. One of the main reasons to do so is simply that some things are always better done by professionals. Another reason is that some things are too time consuming for too little reward. While some people do enjoy puttering about with most of the items below, many others take them on from a sense of false economy. However, there’s really no reason to force yourself to take on the below tasks unless you enjoy them for their own sake or are short on cash.

Taxes

Does anyone enjoy doing taxes? Even tax software isn’t infallible, and you’re still likely to run up against questions that leave you turning to customer support or endlessly searching online forums. More importantly, having an expert file your taxes can save you a lot of money because they know about every type of deduction.

Packing and Moving

As with taxes, no one enjoys moving. Doing it yourself may have seemed optimal when you had only one carload of belongings, but past that point, both packing and moving are better done by professionals. Many people are hesitant to let others pack their things, feeling that they will be less careful, but the fact is that moving professionals are more likely to pack your belongings safely and efficiently.

Landscaping and Yard Work

This is one that you might simply enjoy for its own sake, but if your thumb is not particularly green and your eye for design could be better, leave it to someone who does it professionally. A professional will know what plants work in shade and light and complement one another, how to work with the seasonal movement of the sun and how to make the best use of the space. Even simpler tasks, however, like mowing the lawn might be worth hiring out, particularly if there’s a neighborhood kid who will do it for cheap.

Cleaning House

Entire relationships founder over cleaning issues. Even if you live alone, though, or are on the same page as a partner or roommate about cleaning, a cleaner can be a boon. Not only does it save you from the tedium of doing the work yourself, but it helps maintain the overall level of cleanliness. Just having someone over once a month or so to do some deep cleaning will result in a much cleaner and more pleasant living space.

Sushi, fancy desserts and other complicated food

Some people just enjoy attempting complex food preparations at home, and if you are one of those people, then go to it. There’s a reason sushi masters and pastry chefs train for years in their respective crafts, however. These are the sorts of items that are just nevergoing to taste as good from your kitchen at home. If you enjoy the process, that’s one thing, but if that isn’t the case, it doesn’t make sense to purchase all the ingredients, go through the complicated process of preparation and end up with a mediocre imitation of what you can get in a good restaurant.

Landscape architect Paul Wilson enjoys doing the “dirty” work for people. When Paul isn’t digging, planting or designing, he enjoys writing about some of his favorite plants and has helped to create the Landscape Architect Career Guide for others who would like to play in the dirt as a career.
